An eagle, reflective of the United States, feasts on the limp body of a man—its beak buried deep, its hunger relentless. Shanes reimagines the Promethean myth not as sacrifice for human progress, but as a grim cycle of imperial consumption. The body lies exposed, cruciform, mechanical, ruptured—caught in the machinery of domination.

All around, symbols of modernity orbit like space junk: highways, homes, the architecture of comfort and control. The canvas crackles with violent color and unbearable stillness, suggesting that this moment—this devouring—is not past, but eternal.

    ABOUT

Eric Shanes’ work is a sumptuous exploration of existence, inviting viewers into a cosmic perspective that is as unsettling as it is captivating.

His paintings are unsparing, often provocative, and designed to challenge. Yet, they are undeniably seductive—intensely coloured, majestically composed, and layered with meaning. Shanes never sought easy answers or simple solutions; his art demands engagement, rewarding those who dare to navigate its intricate mazes with wisdom, beauty, and a touch of sardonic humour.

A lifelong scholar and artist, Shanes drew inspiration from a deep well of intellectual and creative pursuits. His passion for the arts—spanning music, literature, and visual mastery—fuelled his ambition to transcend the ordinary. For Shanes, art was not merely about what we see; it was about reaching beyond, into the profound and the unseen. Through his work, we are invited to grapple with the complexities of existence, to find beauty in struggle, and to embrace the challenge of seeing the world anew.
